Four held hostage before balcony plunge
October 27, 2008, 2:03 pm

An armed man eluded security and held four people inside a Sydney apartment for an hour before two naked people climbed off a balcony in fear, one plummeting to her death.

An 18-year-old Chinese woman died after plunging from the third floor balcony onto a concrete landing.

Her 19-year-old Korean boyfriend suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured vertebrae and two broken legs.

He remains in Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

Police Superintendent Luke Freudenstein said the intruder followed the woman through the apartment block's security entrance about 12.30pm Sunday.

Once inside, he held a knife to the woman's throat and followed her up to the apartment, whose door was open ready for her.

"We don't know exactly how the... got in, but we do believe he followed a woman in after she was buzzed in," Supt Freudenstein told reporters.

After about an hour, police received calls from neighbours, who saw the pair climbing from the balcony in what Supt Freudenstein said was an attempt to make it to the unit below.

Both were found naked on the ground and police have not ruled out the possibility of sexual assault.

However, they believe it was an opportunistic crime.

"We believe it is opportunistic, there is nothing to suggest that they targeted those victims, nothing to suggest that they knew those victims."

Police confirmed that four people were living in the apartment, all of them international students.

Three of the residents were among the four people held inside the apartment.

Police have seized CCTV footage from the building to try to identify the intruder, who is so far described only as a man aged about 30 with a dark complexion.
